Arizona Cardinals History
Based in the Phoenix metro area, the Arizona Cardinals are Arizona's home team. The NFL franchise is a part of the NFC West Division and has been in Arizona since 1988.
Starting as a charter member of the National Football League in 1920, the club moved from Chicago to St. Louis in 1960, where the Cardinals played through 1987. They were called the Football Cardinals to prevent confusion with the St. Louis baseball team.
The Arizona Cardinals first played in Tempe at Sun Devil Stadium before moving play in 2006 to State Farm Stadium in Glendale. The Cardinals’ executive offices and training facilities remain in Tempe.
Touching more Arizona cities, the Arizona Cardinals trained at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff from 1988 to 2012, except for 2005, when they trained in Prescott. Arizona Cardinals training camp moved to State Farm Stadium in 2013.
The Cardinals franchise has been to the playoffs 10 times, winning seven playoff games. Three of those were wins during the 2008-2009 playoffs. During that season, the Arizona Cardinals won their only NFC Championship before falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII 27 to 23.
